The fear of uncertainty can often leave us grappling with the question of whether our every step, risk or action would even matter. We yearn to push beyond our comfort zone, to take the next step in our journey, but the potential for a beautiful accomplishment is often weighed down by the possibility of it all being for nought. This existential quandary is a common theme in human thoughts and has been explored in various disciplines of philosophy and psychology. Delving deeper into the concept of nothingness can help us understand and navigate this fear of uncertainty towards a more fulfilling life.
In the general term of nothingness, it truly means a state of nonexistence or absence of anything. You could say an eternal void full of darkness, but it is more than just a void far from empty. In the realm of physics, Merriam-Webster's dictionary describes nothingness as a negation of being, which is made clear by Lawrence Krauss, a theoretical physicist at Arizona State University. He states that nonexistence must consist of 5 things: no space, no time, no particles, no fields, and no laws of nature that make nothingness truly what it is.
In mathematics, nothingness is often denoted as zero or the empty set, representing the absence of any elements. The concept of nothingness plays a crucial role in various mathematical disciplines, such as set theory, algebra, and calculus. It allows mathematicians to define and manipulate abstract concepts, solve equations, and explore the foundations of mathematical systems. Despite its intangible nature, nothingness serves as a fundamental building block in mathematical reasoning and problem-solving. It helps us understand the relationships and patterns within numerical and geometric structures, enabling us to make sense of the intricate world of mathematics.
The concept of nothingness has always intrigued me, whether it be in physics or mathematics, with their terminology and ideas about nothingness. However, nothingness in philosophy is complex, and it suggests that we must come to terms with embracing the void as not just a lack of existence but a space where we can feel comfortable and at peace. Imagine closing your eyes; what do you see? Nothingness, as you cannot visualize the complete absence of everything. It has always scared me to feel that dark, empty vision with nothing to fill that absence with imagination. But my goals, emotions, determination, and risks are all worth putting into the world. Is our purpose genuinely empty? Is it worth dwelling in the depths of our own void? Our questions and doubts always remained whether we achieved our goals or wandered throughout our journey to find one. Nothingness is a powerful tool to use as a void of space to let your mind calm, but use it as a challenge to fulfil every action to make an impact on the world or ourselves. This is to prove that our actions to make a difference are timeless; even if our story ends, another begins. The people around us desire to continue living and enjoy life because of our actions, which have made a difference in their lives and ourselves. To those out there feeling empty and wanting to live in nothingness, open your eyes to the light before you and find a purpose that impacts your life and gives you joy. Inspire, learn and grow. Grow into a person you want to aspire to. Never let your purpose feel malnourished. Fulfil it with your humanity.
